LEARN ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE (DV)
WHY DO PEOPLE ABUSE?
Abuse is the mistreatment or injury of one person or persons by another.
There are a variety of reasons that someone will CHOOSE to abuse an intimate
partner, friend or family member.
Some of those reasons are:
- To manipulate and control the way their partner acts, feels and thinks;
- Because they believe it is the normal way to act;
- Because they have learned that they can get what they want by being
abusive;
- Because they have underdeveloped communication skills, resulting in
built up anger, resentment, and frustration;
- Because expectations and feelings of insecurity create the perceived
need for power over others;
- Because of traditional gender-role expectations (an abuser may get
angry that you can't live up to their unrealistic ideals);
- Because they abuse alcohol or drugs, which lowers inhibitions and
may intensify abuse, but it is NOT the reason they abuse;
- Because they have untreated mental or emotional health problems.
