VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
FVLC depends on volunteers to help us provide important services to women and child survivors of domestic violence. For volunteer positions that involve direct client contact, a 40-hour domestic violence certification training is mandatory. FVLC offers the certification training annually. For more information about FVLC volunteer opportunities or the domestic violence certification training, please call 510.208.0220 or email our volunteer coordinator. Clinical Internship for Law StudentsThe FVLC clinical internship program provides hands-on legal and advocacy experience for law students. Interns may participate in one or more of the following:
The Clinical Internship Program requires a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week during the Fall/Spring semesters, and 37.5 hours per week for summer interns. Part-time positions are unpaid, and academic credit is often available. Summer interns may receive a $3,000 stipend, depending on their other funding sources (i.e. Work/Study programs). Restraining order hearings are primarily scheduled in the Oakland Superior Court on Friday mornings at 8:30 a.m. All interns will be expected to attend court at that time. The program is designed for 2L or 3L students who have taken Evidence and are eligible for certification by the State Bar. FVLC provides training for all aspects of the program and interns are closely supervised. Formerly battered women, women of color and bilingual and/or bi-cultural women are encouraged to apply. Interested applicants should provide a cover letter and resume.
FVLC relies on our Volunteer Attorney Panelists to provide critical pro bono family law services. Participation by volunteer attorneys on even one or two cases per year can make a profound difference in the lives of Alameda County families suffering from domestic abuse. Crisis LineVolunteer counselors answer the FVLC crisis line, providing immediate emotional support to women leaving an abusive relationship. Crisis line workers conduct intake interviews with callers interested in restraining order services, and provide referrals for other services. Domestic violence certification is required. Requires a commitment of at least two hours per week for a one-year term. Board of DirectorsFVLC has a committed Board of Directors with diverse professional backgrounds, who are responsible for the overall management of FVLC. Board members assist in financial management, program planning, and fundraising. We actively recruit survivors of domestic violence to serve as members of the Board and strive to maintain diversity on the Board to remain congruent with the community and clientele we serve. We encourage domestic violence survivors, men and women of color, and bilingual individuals to join the Board.
